A New Website Inquiry Led to This Blog! Why Straight-Talking Therapy & Coaching Works!

A few days ago, I received an inquiry via my website that genuinely made my day. It was from someone looking for a no-nonsense, straight-talking therapist who wasn’t afraid to challenge them. The message read:

"I’m looking for a therapist with a direct, matter-of-fact type approach (a Dr. Phil), someone who’s not afraid to hurt my feelings, that is straight up and honest. If that’s you, I’d like to make an appointment. If it’s not you, can you recommend someone?"

My response? "You found her!"

This inquiry sparked something deep in me because it highlights exactly what many of my clients find most valuable about the work we do together—real talk, straightforward guidance, and tangible results. So, I wanted to take a moment to dive into why this approach works and why it resonates with so many people, especially those who have struggled to find the right therapist or coach.

Many of my clients, including FIFO workers who have access to Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselling but still choose to pay for my services, share a common frustration. While it’s comforting to have a safe space to unpack their feelings and be listened to, they often feel that’s where the therapeutic value ends. For many, the issue lies in a lack of actionable steps or solutions. They are left to wonder, “Where do we go from here?”

This is why, when I introduce myself and my approach, I always say this:

"While I am a counsellor and you will have access to that side of my skills, I am also a coach!"

Think Tony Robbins, Dr. Phil, Marie Forleo, Esther Pere, Jordan Petersonl—some of the best in the business, who combine clinical knowledge with dynamic, solution-focused care. My approach is about more than just offering a listening ear or a place to vent. My goal is to get results, and I’m not here to sugarcoat things. If you want real change, I will challenge you, guide you, and help you take action.

It’s common to hear from clients who’ve nearly given up on therapy, feeling as though they’re stuck in a loop of endless discussions without any significant progress. I understand that frustration, and it’s why I focus on creating momentum, fast.

This is where my coaching background really shines. I’m not just a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst; it’s my coaching side that leads to real progress. Clients who are ready to do the work often find that this is where they truly start to heal.

In my experience, the best coaches have a unique ability to read the person and the situation quickly, pinpointing what needs to change and where to focus our efforts. It’s an intuitive skill that allows me to help people make fast progress—unpacking issues, but also offering real, actionable tools that lead to meaningful results.

I don’t believe just anyone can become a great therapist or coach. Sure, education and experience are important, but there’s a unique intuition that great coaches have. It’s that ability to sense what’s needed and where to laser-focus efforts that separates those who are “good” from those who are truly transformative.
