Can AI Ever Replace Counselling?

Updated: May 24

Will AI replace Counselling, Psychology and Mental Health Support in the Future?

The rise of AI has undoubtedly changed the landscape of many industries, and the field of therapy and counselling is no exception. As someone who has spent nearly a decade supporting clients through face-to-face sessions, the thought of AI playing a bigger role in therapy is a fascinating yet daunting prospect. With tools like ChatGPT becoming more advanced every day, it’s hard to ignore the questions many are asking: Could AI ever replace human counsellors? Is virtual therapy the future of mental health support?

On one hand, it’s easy to see how AI could revolutionise how we deliver services. For one, virtual sessions and AI tools could make counselling more accessible, especially to those who are unable to attend in-person appointments due to geographical, financial, or mobility constraints. Many of us are already experiencing a shift towards virtual services, with online therapy becoming more common and often more affordable. The convenience of a session from the comfort of home can’t be overlooked, especially in a world where time and space are increasingly precious.

AI, like ChatGPT, can certainly offer immediate support by providing information, answering questions, and even guiding clients through basic coping strategies. In fact, some AI programs are designed to help people manage their mental health through structured exercises, self-reflection prompts, or mood tracking. It’s clear that AI has the potential to enhance the way we work, enabling us to connect with clients in new and innovative ways. In some cases, it may even provide a level of anonymity that some individuals prefer, especially when dealing with sensitive issues.

However, as we delve deeper into the possibilities, we can’t ignore the fundamental difference between talking to a machine and talking to a human being. Therapy, at its core, is about connection—building a trusting relationship where clients feel safe, understood, and supported. While AI can process vast amounts of data and respond with impressive speed, it lacks the human qualities that make therapy so impactful: empathy, intuition, and the ability to read body language and subtle cues.

I personally don’t believe AI will ever fully replace human counsellors. There’s something deeply transformative about face-to-face therapy that technology can’t replicate. The therapeutic alliance we build with our clients is based on mutual understanding, vulnerability, and shared experiences—things that, to me, cannot be replaced by a machine. There’s also the element of emotional presence; when a person walks into a therapy session, they bring their whole self—their emotions, experiences, and uniqueness. These are things an AI system can’t fully grasp or connect with in the same way a human can.

That said, AI is certainly shaping the future of therapy in a big way. While it may not replace face-to-face support, it may change how we deliver it. We might see more blended services in the future, where clients can access AI-driven resources for support between sessions, or even use virtual platforms to have a session with a therapist who works remotely. As technology continues to evolve, we’ll likely see more innovations that make mental health care more accessible, personal, and efficient.

The speed at which AI is advancing is undeniable, and it’s possible that in the next 10 to 20 years, we could see AI-powered services become more mainstream. But for now, and perhaps forever, I believe there will always be a place for the human touch in therapy. The relationship between therapist and client is irreplaceable, and no matter how advanced technology becomes, there will always be a need for the deep, meaningful connections that only humans can create.
